We get stuck on buying the basics for our wardrobes so often that we forget the statement piece that will spice up the basics and make us feel new again. I know when I started my capsule wardrobe journey I found absolutely no shortage of lists on what basics you MUST have in your wardrobe. I have a lot of problems with that idea that I won't bore you with at this moment, but one major one is that these lists and blog posts seemed to promote the idea that all you would ever need and want are these ever classic basic pieces. There is nothing wrong with basics, but unless you're one of the 2% of people whose style is minimalist, you're gonna get bored, and fast. That's why I try to keep my wardrobe fresh with statement pieces to work in with my preferred basics.  If you couldn't tell from the absolute departure of my usual style in this picture, this brightly checked midi skirt is my statement piece. Another great thing about statement pieces is they let you try out styles you might be feeling that day or a style you've never tried before. Pairing them with basics you're already comfortable with can help you get used to the style and how to incorporate it in your wardrobe. If you were wondering...jury is still out on this one for me. I love the look, but I'm not sure it's ME. And that is the only person I want to be most of the time. Some of the time I do want to be Beyoncé.

One lovely commenter on Instagram said I look like I should be an iPod silhouette, so that's my life goal now. Call me, Apple.

In other happenings of this week, I'm a new convert to the half-tuck religion. Goodbye front tuck, hello our lord and savior the half-tuck.

I call this look the casual southern belle, because is there any other way to do vintage than southern? Maybe that's just the sweet tea in my veins talking, though. I do love how the gray tank makes this loud skirt more casual and slightly more wearable. I will never understand how our grandmothers wore this kinda stuff in their daily life. I like to be able to move without yards of fabric about me, thank you very much. This outfit is proof of why you need to wear a piece more than once to get an idea of how it could work for you....and the jury is still out. What do you think? Sometimes I need someone to tell me what's ME, because I'm too close to that gal.
