Let's just go ahead and get out of the way that I am not the type of girl to mix patterns, like EVER! Don't get me wrong, I envy you people. I look at your wacky patterns and how you pair them perfectly with another equally wacky pattern and I am just drooling with jealousy all over my plain, patternless clothing. But, this week I decided to step out of my comfort zone and foray into TWO new territories for myself. Keep that scroll going to see the personal fashion rule I broke (to the chagrin of my mother).

Was it just my mother who insisted that navy and black never be worn together? Cause I'm kind of convinced that little chunk of "wisdom" was passed down the female line only in my family. In the past few years, I feel like navy has become THE color. It's no longer the navy from pantsuits in the 80s that were indistinguishable from black. No more mismatched platform shoes from the 90s, either. The navy of the 2010s (is that how you refer to this decade?) is a lighter, brighter navy with an actual distinction from blue. I was hesitant. I thought I was being fooled by Insta girls and deceptive lighting in online stores, but I gave in and bought my first item in navy. Now, this is a navy checked with white, because I have commitment issues. When I paired this skirt with the black shift dress, the angels cried and rejoiced. Alas, I have been freed from the fashion police.

While we're on the topic of navy...this gorgeous coral striped top also comes in a navy and white stripe. It just may be my second navy piece of clothing. Can J.Crew do anything wrong? The answer is yes, a ton. But when they get it right, they get it RIGHT.

Now this is a girl who can mix patterns. She looks so fun, doesn't she?! While I had fun trying this whole pattern thing out, I'm not sure how often it will seep into the way I dress on a daily basis. Honestly, I had to put a lot of thought into this, and I was VERY concerned it wouldn't work. But, just like anything, trying something new with your wardrobe gets easier with practice and you gain more confidence each time you succeed.
