“What the heck is a seasonal color analysis and why should I care?” – what you’re probably thinking. Before I started to care about my style, I just wore and bought whatever struck my fancy. I ended up with a rainbow of a closet, but I only reached for things in certain colors.
I like pink and bright yellow, just not on me. I like red, but only particularly shades. It isn’t just preference, because my house is full of bright colors. It’s what looks good on and complements my skintone and hair.
Seasonal Color Analysis takes the coloring and undertones of three things into account:
Your Eyes
Your Hair
Your Skintone
Then, depending on how light or dark each of those things are, it puts you into a “season”: Spring, Summer, Autumn, or Winter. The colors in your season will complement your features best, and you probably already reach for some of these colors!
Seasons are used because we already associate certain colors with each season, like white snow in the winter, rich red leaves in the fall, kelly green grass in the summer, or pastel pink flowers in the spring. Each season is then broken down into a subtype like cool or soft or deep, which just tells you how vivid or muted the colors are in this season you should wear. You are probably safe wearing any color in your season, but if you want the most flattering option, try to stick to your subtype.
Of course, you can always experiment outside of your season, as well! For example, my season does not have black or gray in, but I find if I wear blacks that don’t have blue undertones and warmer grays, that it is flattering. Finding your season is just a starting point to help you figure out the color palette you may want for your wardrobe.
If you take nothing else from this, you will want to determine if your skin, hair, and eyes have a neutral, warm, or cool undertone. Then, choose colors for your clothing that have the same undertone.
If you are a Cool Winter, you most likely have the following characteristics:
Hair: Ashy blonde, Ashy light or dark brown, or Black with blue undertones
Skin: Olive or Cool Blue undertones
Eyes: Light brown, blue, or gray
Cool seasons (Summer or Winter) do not depend on contrast or lack of contrast between skin/hair/and eye color, rather it is the overall undertone of these three things. Cool seasons will have a cool or bluish undertone to their hair, skin, and eyes. Pastel or light colored shades are not flattering on cool season types, rather a medium tone of the colors in your season are most appropriate to contrast and complement your undertones. Don’t be afraid to experiment with slightly darker shades than what is in your palette, but avoid warm toned shades.
Celebrities that are a Cool Winter are: Liv Tyler, Lauren Graham, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kristin Davis
If you are a Clear Winter, you most likely have the following characteristics:
Hair: Medium to dark brown or black
Skin: Olive or Cool Blue Undertones
Eyes: Bright green or blue
Clear seasons (Spring or Winter) have a higher contrast between their skintone and hair and eye colors. For example, fair skin with dark brown hair and bright blue eyes. However, blondes can also be a “Clear” season type, if their hair is a particularly bright blond that is not platinum or ashy. The color palettes for clear season types are the clearest and least muted one way or the other. Meaning, that the colors are what we could consider a true red or true blue, like the crayon box you had as a child with a small variation of shades and only the brightest shades of each color.
Celebrities that are a Clear Winter are: Courteney Cox, Zooey Deschanel, Alexis Bledel, Angelina Jolie
If you are a Deep Winter, you most likely have the following characteristics:
Hair: Medium to dark brown or black
Skin: Olive or Cool Blue Undertones
Eyes: Dark Brown or Black
Deep seasons (Autumn or Winter) have varying skintones, but their eyes and hair color are similarly dark. The most flattering shades in the winter color palette are the deepest shades for the season.
Celebrities that are a Deep Winter are: Priyanka Chopra, Lupita Nyong’o, Lucy Liu, Anne Hathaway
If you are a Light Spring, you most likely have the following characteristics:
Hair: Golden Blonde, Strawberry Blonde, or Golden Brown
Skin: Fair skin with pink or peachy undertones
Eyes: Blue, Green, Hazel, or Light Brown
Light seasons (Spring or Summer) have light hair and a light skintone for your ethnicity. Your eyes will also be light or bright colors like blue, green, or light brown. The color palettes for light season types are muted but not dark. Light colors differ from muted colors in that they are diluted with white and appear more pastel than muted colors that appear to be darker than their original color. The light colors complement your light overall coloring, instead of overwhelming it with harsh or dark colors.
Celebrities that are a Light Spring are: Taylor Swift, Amanda Seyfried, Gwyneth Paltrow, Scarlett Johannson
If you are a Clear Spring, you most likely have the following characteristics:
Hair: Golden light to dark brown
Skin: Skin has a pink undertone and ranges from more ivory than milky white to golden brown
Eyes: Green, Blue, Light Brown
Clear seasons (Spring or Winter) have a higher contrast between their skintone and hair and eye colors. For example, fair skin with dark brown hair and bright blue eyes. However, blondes can also be a “Clear” season type, if their hair is a particularly bright blond that is not platinum or ashy. The color palettes for clear season types are the clearest and least muted one way or the other. Meaning, that the colors are what we could consider a true red or true blue, like the crayon box you had as a child with a small variation of shades and only the brightest shades of each color.
Celebrities that are a Clear Spring are: Emma Stone, Cara Delevingne, Tyra Banks, Beyonce
If you are a Warm Spring, you most likely have the following characteristics:
Hair: Strawberry blonde to copper auburn and light to dark golden brown
Skin: Warm beige, slightly bronzed, may have freckles
Eyes: Green, Blue, Hazel, or Light Brown
Warm seasons (Spring or Autumn) have hair and skin colors with a deeper coloring and warm, golden undertones. Your eyes may be similarly dark, but have a golden spark to the green, brown, or hazel. The color palettes for warm season types are muted but not dark or pastel, and they will have a warm tone. Both warm seasons share neutral brown bases, but the spring palette has the warmest tones of bright spring colors.
Celebrities that are a Warm Spring are: Amy Adams, Mandy Moore, Cameron Diaz, Marcia Cross
If you are a Light Summer, you most likely have the following characteristics:
Hair: Lightly colored hair such as light to medium ashy blonde or strawberry blonde
Skin: Skin has a neutral undertone that is neither warm or cool, but may have a slight pink tinge.
Eyes: Blue or Green
Light seasons (Spring or Summer) have light hair and a light skintone for your ethnicity and may have a pink tinge.
Celebrities that are a Light Summer are: Meryl Streep, Amy Poehler, Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts
If you are a Soft Summer, you most likely have the following characteristics:
Hair: Medium to Dark Ashy Brown
Skin: Medium beige to dark brown with neutral undertones
Eyes: Gray, Blue, Hazel
Soft seasons (Summer or Autumn) have little contrast between their hair and skintone. You will most likely have neutral undertones, neither warm or cool, but you may lean one way or the other on occasion or depending on what you are wearing. You are truly a chameleon! The most flattering colors in your color palette or soft, but not washed out.
Celebrities that are a Soft Summer are: Ellen Pompeo, Leona Lewis, Sarah Jessica Parker, Katie Holmes
If you are a Cool Summer, you most likely have the following characteristics:
Hair: Medium to dark Ashy Brown
Skin: Skin has a cool undertone and ranges from medium beige to dark brown
Eyes: Blue or Gray
Cool seasons (Summer or Winter) do not depend on contrast or lack of contrast between skin/hair/and eye color, rather it is the overall undertone of these three things. Cool seasons will have a cool or bluish undertone to their hair, skin, and eyes. Pastel or light colored shades are not flattering on cool season types, rather a medium tone of the colors in your season are most appropriate to contrast and complement your undertones. Don’t be afraid to experiment with slightly darker shades than what is in your palette, but avoid warm toned shades.

If you know your season, now you’re ready to build a color palette for your capsule wardrobe! Easy peasy, if you do it right. I wrote this post on the process and revealed my one trick to having the perfect color palette.
Can you post the Warm Autumn Palette? It seems that the Soft Autumn Palette was duplicated.
This has been super helpful!
Just posted it! Thanks for catching that!
I’m having a hard time figuring out of I’m a clear spring or clear winter. I’ve always believed my skin tone had blue undertones, that’s why Silver looks way better on me than blue. My eyes are a darker green when tired but other days lighten and have good around pupil. Hair when younger was medium brown with reddish coppery highlights.
Thank you so much for offering this. I’ve always wanted to know "my" season!
I am trying to determine my season. I have a neutral skin tone, very green eyes with amber flecks in the center but predominantly green, and light to medium brown hair. Basically I have a feature in neutral, cool, and warm. Decent contrast between my hair and skin tone but not crazy, but there is contrast. I have worn platinum blonde hair and auburn red hair, and both made my face pop and shine more than my natural color, in different ways.
I’m very confused as to if I even have a season. I seem to not fit into any of the categories. Lol.
I am a blonde, blue-eyed with a fair complexion with a cool undertone. I have always thought pinks and grays looked good on me. Bright turquoise is a color I like but now navy is my new black. Am I all over the map? My eyes re NOT crystal light blue but not jewel toned either. A cool light blue.
Wow. This is the simplest, most accurate test I’ve taken! Mousy brown hair, deep, earthy hazel eyes, and very fair but rich skin….Autumn.
I can’t even comprehend how many of these color palette tests I’ve done the past three years. The results never resonated with me! The latest one pegged me as a summer – but I know I look reddish in very pale pink and ghoulishly pale in pale blue. And I know black and bold red works, so it had me so confused. I have now finally learned I am a winter – a clear winter. Thank you!
What happens if you fit into none of the categories? I have a warm, (not pale but not olive, either) skin tone, warm-toned golden blonde hair, and blue-green eyes with some grey in them too. So…?
I am the exact same way. Medium blonde hair with very golden undertones, medium-fair neutral skin tone, and gray-blue eyes
I have very pale neutral skin and bright, clear blue eyes from my Norwegian ancestry. However I have very bright coppery red hair. I freckle and burn very easily and my skin does not and has never tanned. I’m practically see through pale and have very pale red eyebrows and eyelashes. Light summers characteristics seem to suit me best but my hair is bright red not strawberry blonde.
I’m either deep winter or deep autumn. Noticed in the article that the deep autumn has the exact same words as the deep winter between the characteristics and celebrity examples.
I have very cool toned skin that is also very pale and I can burn really easily but Inhave brown hair and black-brown eyes, I also have a few freckles. I don’t know which category I would fit into.
How do you determine your season once you go gray? I’m a mix of seasons based on these descriptions even before mixing in the natural changing of my hair to gray.
The season won’t ever really change: your eyes and hair colour are still present. Work with what colour your hair was. Hold different fabric colours next to your face – you’ll soon get a feel for what season you are. I’m an autumn and no matter how white my hair goes, orange/mango lip colour will always look better on me than fire engine red!
Hi,
So, with my blue eyes, blue veins and so probably a cool skin undertone (which burns easily) and my strawberry blonde hair I either fit in Light spring, warm spring or light summer. This is getting more difficult the more I do these kind of quizes…
So glad I found this. Very clear, very organized, thanks a lot! But unfortunately I’m still not sure. I’m 99% sure I have a cool undertone (pink), but my eyes are golden brown and my hair is medium blonde. I feel like the only person in this world with this combination. I recognize myself in the clear spring, but I still read about "light brown" eyes… As I said, My eyes are golden brown, not light brown. Glad there is green and orange in the palet because I love those two colours. The palet I absolutely ADORE is warm autumn. Unfortunately that’s not mine…
I think it’s a pity there doesn’t exist any type with blonde hair like mine and golden brown eyes. 🙁 Oh and a cool skin type.
Hi there! Your post resonated with me! I also have medium blonde hair with medium to dark brown eyes and what I think is a cool undertone(fair skin). Warm colors don’t tend to suit me, but I cannot figure out what I am either.
P.S.: I forgot light spring and clear spring because of the higher contrast between my haircolour and skin tone vs my eyes. (So, do blonde hair and darker brown eyes also count?)
Well, maybe it helps a little bit a least…
Oh and I also really like the deep autumn and the warm spring palette also, but, you already know…
So confused! I have very fair white skin, eyes are deep green with dark outline around colour and I think I am brunette but hairdresser says Blonde number 6. Goodness knows!
I have exactly those colours and I’m confused too! I love wearing dark colours with cool reds and I’m told they suit me. Maybe I’ll just go with what I like and not worry!! Don’t normally comment to these things but was blown away that we have identical Colouring! We rock!!
I went through this three times and couldn’t find and mention of gray hair.
Work with what hair colour you used to be. If you were born grey – very unlikely – as opposed to having white fair hair, start with Winter.
Your "natural" hair colour…. when you were a child…. as your eyes and skin colour would remain the same except if you changed Countries…..
I would treat it as a light blond because you’re looking to see if there’s contrast between your skin and hair. If your skin is also light, that’s low contrast. If it’s dark, that’s higher contrast.
Would the colors we naturally gravitate to match with our color analysis? I have done multiple quizzes, with grey blue eyes, pale ivory skin with neutral undertone, reddish brown hair. More often than not, quizzes tell me I am a cool winter/spring, but I wouldn’t be caught dead in those colors. Literally every color in my closet is warm autumn.
Hi there !
I can’t find my season at all.
My skin is really fair with neutral undertone
My eyes are deep brown and my hair are naturally Ash blonde and quite deep but I’m bleached in neutral blonde (not too cold but a lill icy) and we Can see my originale color at thé top of my hair.
M’y eyebrows are deep like cara deligne!
Thanks by advance!
I look like Selena Gomez when she was Blonde !
Hi so I have light olive skin and yellow undertones, my hair is medium brown and I have medium/dark brown eyes and I’m wondering what season I am! If anyone could help that would be great!
Hi, i was wondering if you knew what my season would be. I have a strange mix of warm and cool. I have dark brown hair and pale white skin in cool light, but in the sun my hair takes on medium brown with orange-red or gold tones, and my skin looks yellowish. My skin is generally pinky-yellow or looks white. I have freckles, and dark hazel eyes that with a sunburst pattern. My veins are blue/purple. I keep jumping between shaded soft Autumn, deep winter, deep Autumn and clear spring in my analysis of my colour type. What kind of season would you think I am? Thank you so much if you can help
I tend to also look terrible in Autumn and Summer colour palettes, but really great in winter ones and spring ones. I look at my best when I pair a bright colour equally with a dull colour, or a cool colour with a warm colour
*deep and cool.
Sorry for all the comments
I kind of jump between clear and cool in cool light, and warm and muted in warm light
I was born with red hair, not bright red, but bright strawberry blond, very blue eyes, pale but not white skin. Easy to burn. Blue veins, very freckled as a child, but faded on face as I aged. I was put in Light Spring, and those colors are good, but also I identify with Light Summer, and it’s colors. I am now mostly grey with light red mix, lots of shine. And still trying to find a true season.
